What happened
On July 21, 2026, Google announced three new Gemini models: Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber. TechCrunch reported the launch the same day. Google positions the trio around production AI agent work: lower latency, more reliable output, and strengths in coding, knowledge work, and multimodal tasks that mix text, images, and more in one model.
Google describes 3.6 Flash as its new default workhorse. It says the model uses 17% fewer output tokens than 3.5 Flash on the Artificial Analysis Index, and lists pricing of $1.50 per 1M input tokens and $7.50 per 1M output tokens. Those benchmark, efficiency, and price figures are Google's own, so read them as vendor claims rather than independent measurements.
Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is pitched as Google's fastest and most cost-effective 3.5-class model, aimed at high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks. Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is a specialized, cyber-focused model that Google pairs with a tool it calls CodeMender for finding and fixing code vulnerabilities. TechCrunch reports that access to the Cyber model is a limited pilot for governments and trusted partners, so it is not generally available.
Google did not release a Gemini 3.5 Pro. It says 3.5 Pro is testing with partners and will reach broad availability when ready, and that pre-training for Gemini 4 has begun. Google did not give dates.
Why it matters
Two words worth explaining: Flash and Pro. In Gemini naming, Flash models are the smaller, faster, cheaper tier built for volume and speed, while Pro models are larger and aim for the hardest reasoning. Most everyday app features, chat replies, summaries, and extraction, sit comfortably on a Flash-class model.
For builders, the interesting claim is efficiency. If 3.6 Flash truly needs fewer output tokens for similar quality, the cost of running an agent or API feature could drop, since output tokens usually dominate the bill. A single vendor index does not settle that. Fewer tokens on one benchmark may not match your workload, and a headline per-token price ignores how many tokens your task actually spends.
The Cyber model is a reminder that specialized models are arriving alongside general ones. Google frames it as defensive, for hardening code. A limited pilot is not a product you can rely on today.
What to do next
- Compare total task cost, not the sticker price. Multiply your real input and output token counts by each model's rate; a cheaper per-token model can cost more if it is wordier.
- Test quality on your own examples. Vendor benchmarks are a starting hint, not a verdict for your use case.
- Weigh latency and availability too. A fast, cheap model helps only if it is reliably available in your region and tier.
- Start most features on a Flash-class model, and move up to Pro only where you can measure that the harder reasoning pays off.
- Do not assume the Cyber model or 3.5 Pro is available to you. Check current access before designing around them, and use any security tooling defensively.
